You also need erect light and poles on heavy duty transmission towers. Most electrical companies get their jobs done from lineman as they are cost effective. As a beginner you just cannot jump from technical education on to electrical branch without any formal training.
You end up in an electrical lineman job by working in a formal setting. Further you can let your knowledge grow by pursuing course in electrical engineering. You can start your career as ground man in any local electrical company. This is entry level job in electrical industry and most of the times you will observe the work so that you are ready to work. In this way you can pass the apprentice level after you have completed your role as a ground man.
Then you need to practice by working or climbing on poles so that you get to know the other aspects of this job. Now you can go to the second level because this would normally comprise of climbing poles with low voltage without repairing any power lines.
The third level requires you to repair and handle secondary lines with proper safety equipments. When you have succeeded doing this you become a better lineman all due to hands-on experience.
Your apprenticeship basically ends in fourth level and your work at this level includes the usage of cherry picker so that you can reach primary lines. If you gain competence at this level which means that you are ready tom work independently.
Now you are ready to participate in any of the professional opportunities that are offered in your place. Most of these sessions are organize d by professional linemen. The lessons include new repair techniques, workplace safety and tools so that your job is easily done.
